Odyssey curved trunking in Staffordshire University

Marshall-Tufflex's revolutionary CAT 6 compliant and all-curved PVC-U cable containment system, Odyssey, scored top marks for its first class performance in a major refurbishment of a teaching block at Staffordshire University.

Building services consultant for the project, Burgess Design Associates (BDA), chose Odyssey for its CAT 6 capabilities and easy-on-the eye, attractively curved profile. Some 1,500 linear metres of Odyssey were supplied by Edmundson Electrical and installed by Cannock Electrical in seminar rooms, classrooms and offices of Beaconside C Block on the university campus.

Old trunking was removed to make way for the sleek Odyssey – and BDA considered that the installation went very well. Odyssey's almost effortless, clip-on lid function allowed the trunking to compensate for any surface irregularities, creating a smoother, cleaner and far quicker installation than tradtional trunking systems may have allowed.

Trevor Burgess of BDA said: “We replaced the old trunking with Odyssey on walls and vertical drops where it is highly visible. Important to us was its CAT 6 capability and its appealing profile. We were also pleased because it attracts less dust due to its curves.” In fact BDA was so impressed with the results, that the firm also used Odyssey in a further installation involving the replacement of trunking in Staffordshire Hospital Trust's boardroom.

For the Staffordshire University contract, BDA worked closely with its Estates' team and architect, Hulme Upright, throughout the refurbishment of the five storey, 100m long building. Commenting on the refurbishment, Ron Corbett, Estates Manager for Staffordshire University said: “We are very satisfied with the overall project and with the trunking system.”

Odyssey, with its sleek lines and easy-to-clean, clutter-free profile, is proving particularly popular in health and education installations, particularly when specified in its antimicrobial variant Bio Trunking Solutions. However, its advantages extend beyond good looks, maintenance benefits and quick and easy installation: the three-compartment system also has adjustable internal and external bends and a built-in cable tray. In addition, its comprehensive range of moulded fittings accommodate a bend radius for CAT 6 cable control compliance, minimising the need for external couplers and further enhancing its aesthetic appeal.
