Wisdom of Saints
Southampton is one of Britain’s most historic ports. It is also a vibrant, modern city offering a warm welcome to visitors from all over the world.
Building on Southampton’s vision to be a leader in addressing climate change in The Climate Change and
Air Quality Strategy, the council will begin the transformation of Southampton into a low carbon city. In this way it can make a real contribution to reducing the impacts of climate change, which has been identified as the single most significant issue faced by the global community.
Rockstone Lane in Southampton is the first project in the UK, using Philips’ Fortimo LED modules. Southampton City Council has decided to deliver on its commitment to reduce the carbon footprint by utilizing the latest green efficient LED lighting. Rockstone Lane has been chosen for a pilot run before
deciding whether to extend this approach across other streets in Southampton. “We want to upgrade this
street with new lighting but in the existing old heritage style”, explains Mark Humphrey, project manager at
Southampton City Council.
The most important benefit of the new lighting solution had to be energy efficiency to reduce Southampton’s
carbon footprint. Secondly the new solution needed to offer a maintenance free lifetime of 10 years and a crisper light source. Fortimo LED DLM 2000 was designed in to the existing JW (UK) Victoria street lighting lantern. The heat sink design was quite crucial in the design of the lantern, enabling the lantern to last longer, making installation easier and allowing the lantern to be retrofitted in to existing installations.
The Fortimo LED DLM system produces a high quality, bright, white light and is specifically designed to incorporate improved LED efficiencies, with no changes to dimensions, driver or lumen output. The system is equipped with a special Fortimo phosphor technology, enabling a breakthrough in LED efficacy. In this project 70W lanterns were replaced with 45W lanterns! The Fortimo driver is one of the most efficient on the market.
The whole team at Philips and JW(UK) worked hard together to put the Fortimo LED DLM 2000 in the existing elegant JW(UK) Victoria lantern. The Rockstone Lane project in Southampton demonstrates a great result of teamwork and brings many possibilities for the future.
Mark Humphrey: “The Fortimo LED DLM we have been trialling in Southampton has improved the lighting
levels with a crisper, cleaner source with a greater spread than the surrounding high press sodium lighting (SON) in what should prove to be a lower maintenance and lower consuming unit of 0.1A in comparison to 0.4A of the SON gear.”
Due to the crisper light, the general sense of wellbeing and security with in the community has increased. The new installation is well-lit and offers a neutral white colour temperature of 4000K. The new Fortimo solution has a lower maintenance and a longer lifetime. Mark Humphrey explains enthusiastically, “In the old situation we had to carry out maintenance once a year and we had to change lamps every 5 years. With the new Fortimo solution we have doubled the relamp period up to 10 years! And on top of this we will save money and the environment.”
