Venture Lighting, Creating a sharp image

Venture Lighting’s Metal Halide lamps are being used to achieve he quality standard ISO 12647 or PCP, a commercial printing company specialising in the high specification printing of magazines and brochures.

Situated on an 11 acre site in Halesfield, Shropshire, PCP has recently won two awards and one commendation from leading industry magazine ‘Print Week’. The company is keen to build on its success and improve on its high standards, which has meant a review of the lighting for the whole facility.

In order to meet the criteria for the ISO standard, the required lighting levels have to be accurate for the printers to clearly identify and match colours. This has been achieved by equipping the light canopies above the press desk with 5000K D50 specification lighting, which is a very tight tolerance full spectrum fitting. The 5000K is used in the print industry to give the best representation of printed images with different ink types
under artificial light when compared to that of natural daylight.

Of equal importance is the quality of illumination in the printing machinery areas, where any illumination that is not of sufficient quality will contaminate the D50 lighting in the viewing area. To resolve this problem Venture’s 365W Natural White lamps have been used throughout the printing area within the existing Holophane fittings.

Venture’s Natural White Lamps offer light output in all parts of the visual spectrum to provide better colour
rendering and also provide unrivalled lumen maintenance. In common with other Venture ranges, the Natural White series also offers extended performance and long life through the use of the company’s Uni-Form technology.

PCP’s Warren Irving, Works and Technical Director commented, “We are delighted with the results achieved from using these lamps. The lux level now provided also has the added advantage that if a customer chooses to “press pass” a job, the quality of lighting in all of the print areas will give an excellent representation of the job viewed in natural daylight.

In addition to providing better quality light, Venture’s Natural White lamp 365W provides the same light level of a standard HIPE 400W lamp but provides us with energy savings with no loss of lighting output. To be able to use the existing light fittings with the new lamps also provided PCP with a considerable cost saving.”

ISO 12647 is the standard for print colour management and this ensures a uniform reproduction of colours,
eliminating misunderstandings of requirements as well as reducing waste.
