Rugged power supplies for demanding environments
A standard Power Supply will often not be sufficient to cope with the extreme conditions in which it may be required to operate in many environments and applications. In military, marine and railway applications, for example, a power supply may have to be able to cope with excessive vibration or shock, moisture, corrosion or temperature extremes.
For such applications, varying degrees of ‘ruggedisation’ may be required. Compared to standard power supplies, this could include conformal coating or potting of PCBs and adding a ruggedised case. In addition, water or weather proofing of an enclosed power supply may also be required. Cables external to the enclosed power supply also have to be up to the job - tough enough to survive crush forces or a corrosive environment, for example.
Sourcing power supplies suitable for harsh working environments can be a challenge. As well as a requirement for ruggedisation, some products need to be designed to give decades of service so it is important that products are thoroughly tested and the correct materials used for longevity and reliability. In addition, space constraints and the environmental demands also need to be catered for.
