Fire-rated downlighters evolve
The iCage fire-rated downlight range, from Ansell Lighting, features intelligent fire rated technology, designed to overcome many of the problems experienced with existing ‘can-style’ fire-rated downlights.
The iCage utilises a patented downward directional intumescent disc, which has been tested to ensure it can prevent the risk of fire spreading between compartments through a ceiling. This technology has made it possible to create an ‘open-caged’ concept, which does not compromise product performance or require time consuming installation processes.
The design of the iCage range is said to reduce the internal temperature of the downlight body to optimise product performance and lamp life. In doing so its innovative ‘cool cage’ design avoids the requirement for forward heat lamps, as it allows movement of air around the lamp to create a cooler operating environment.
iCage also offers uniformity of style as the same fitting can be used throughout a single installation, as it enables a range of differing branded lamps to be accommodated, including a dedicated version for installations where compliance with Part ‘L’ of the Building Regulations is required. A spring-loaded lamp holder, designed to only accept the energy efficient GU10 CFL or LED lamps, provides for a fast and easy lamp fitment and removes the worry associated with incorrect lamp replacement. As the fixture housing is designed to prevent the installation of halogen lamps, compliance with Part ‘L’ is achieved.
Design considerations have also taken into account installation problems previously encountered by contractors, so the standard iCage downlights and gimbals have the same 76mm cut-out whilst the connection block terminals and physical size avoids the additional cost of a separate junction box. The terminals accept 2 x 1.5mm twin and earth cables with a time saving, screwless cable clamp and snap-fit cover. Sleeved and double insulated high temperature resistant lamp cables maximise product performance and help to avoid overheating.
iCage has also gained compliance with the requirements of the Building Regulations ‘Part ‘B’ in respect of the fire test for 30, 60 and 90 minute ceilings construction. It also meets all the requirements of the Building Regulations Part ‘C’ Moisture Protection and Part ‘E’ Resistance to passage of sound.
