The impact of Amendment 1 of the Wiring Regulations (BS 7671:2008)

The first amendment to BS 7671:2008 Requirements for Electrical Installations was issued on 1st July 2011 by the IET (formerly the IEE) and is intended to come into effect on 1st January 2012. Installations designed after 31st December 2011 are to comply with BS 7671:2008 incorporating Amendment No 1:2011.

The amended Wiring Regulations have been jointly published by the IET and the British Standards Institution (BSI) and feature important changes to the 17th Edition, which was published in 2008.

Section 534 of the amended regulations sets out requirements for the control of transient overvoltages that affect all modern electronic components and processors. This new section has been implemented by CENELEC in HD 60364-5-53 and gives detailed requirements on the selection, erection and co-ordination of Surge Protection Devices (SPDs).
