The Building Services Event opens up a world of opportunities for the building services industry issues
As the UK moves towards a more sustainable future, the latest industry research predicts a wealth of new opportunities for the building services industry, making it more important than ever for professionals to embrace the imminent changes and develop new skills.
Highlighted by The NICEIC and the Electrical Contractors Association (ECA) in their 2021 Vision: The Future of the Electrical Contracting Industry, key opportunities for the industry moving forward include more training for small businesses in new technology and skills and development of new products to enable sustainable new builds and renovations.
Those wishing to take advantage of these industry-wide opportunities should visit M&E- The Building Services Event, the UK’s only dedicated event for all building services. The event attracts more than 250 industry-leading exhibitors including Mitsubishi Electric UK Ltd, Gewiss UK Ltd, DEHN (UK) Ltd, Remeha Commercial and Bosch Security Systems.
Discussing electrical installation concerns, Claire Allsop, Marketing co-ordinator, DEHN (UK) Ltd, said: “Whilst DEHN (UK) Ltd offer a wide range of surge protection, lightning protection, earthing and safety equipment, all meeting the high requirements of BS 6651 and BS EN 62305 Lightning Protection Standards, surge and lightning protection has unfortunately tended to be an afterthought in electrical installations.
“Today, many commercial premises have little or no protection against surges – the transient overvoltages that are produced, for example, by lightning strikes, can have devastating consequences for electrical equipment and personal safety. For this reason protection is needed. While this may seem to be a specialist area, moves are afoot to bring it into the mainstream.”
In addition to having technical staff available at M&E-The Building Services Event, DEHN will also be holding a seminar which will introduce a selection of surge protection devices in BS7671 amendment 1.
Run in association with the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and supported by the ECA, NICEIC and the Heating and Ventilating Contractors Association (HVCA), M&E-The Building Services Event and its co-located events is expected to attract more than 8,000 attendees with an interest in a range of industry areas including electrical installation, plumbing, heating and ventilation.
Mark Northcott, MD, Remeha Commercial, said: “Since launching the first gas condensing boiler over 35 years ago, we have been at the forefront of this exciting technology and continue to refine products. It is evident that energy costs, energy supply and low carbon technology has become the main concerns for our industry. As a result, Remeha has continued to research and innovate, pushing the boundaries of condensing boiler efficiency with its high efficiency condensing boilers.
“Remeha Commercial already has over 330 biomass installations in the UK and is currently researching other renewable technologies and how they perform, so that we can introduce more LZC products that will make the necessary environmental savings.”
With education and innovation driving this industry, M&E- The Building Services Event, sees the return of the Training Academy and CPD Theatre (allowing visitors the opportunity to gain valuable CPD points), where a programme of free dedicated seminar sessions will provide expert opinion and guidance on significant industry concerns.
The Innovation Showcase also returns with a new and improved format following its successful launch in 2010. Providing a platform for pioneering industry experts, visitors are invited to witness a range of product innovations that will assist in saving energy and ultimately allow the end-user to profit from sustainability.
Co-location
With energy efficiency and facilities management key elements where the performance of a building is concerned, M&E- The Building Services Event is co-located with Energy Solutions, the UK’s leading energy management and procurement event and Total Workplace Management, The FM & Estates event; presenting an all inclusive experience for visitors.
Alongside leading industry speakers such as Mark Chadwick, CEO of Carbon Clear and Delphine Wolfe, Head of Consultancy, National Energy Foundation, Energy Solutions is set to showcase the latest in a wide range of products and services from hundreds of exhibitors including powerPerfector, Scottish Power, ENER-G plc, Bayat Energy, Excalibur LPA Ltd and Siemens; bringing together professionals within the energy sector from across the UK.
Patrick Bayat, Managing Director of Bayat Energy, said: “Due to the economic climate, people are cutting back; therefore making savings is the main driver for domestic homeowners, companies and large organisations.”
Bayat Energy performs a form of solar- leasing, whereby they lease rooftops from domestic and non-domestic properties. The client subsequently consents to use of their property for 25 years, allowing Bayat Energy to implement solar PV installations which are subsequently covered under the terms of the Government’s Feed-In Tarrif. The electricity that is generated from the PV installation is self-generated therefore the property owner would gain free electricity and not have to pay the utility company.
Such installations generally cost between £10-15,000, however they could generate up to £150,000 for the property owner. At the end of the 25 years, the property owner will own the PV installation.
As the UK’s largest exhibition dedicated to energy procurement, energy management and renewables, Energy Solutions is supported by The Carbon Trust, a global leader in providing specialist support to help businesses cut carbon emissions and save energy. The Carbon Trust will also be taking part in the event’s comprehensive educational programme.
As the premier meeting place in the South East for the FM profession to network, increase knowledge base and establish new business relationships, Total Workplace Management and its co-located events attract thousands of industry professionals through its doors and this year visitors will see an even greater programme of proceedings throughout the two-day event.
Total Workplace Management continues its educational commitment to the sector by hosting its free conference programme where an array of distinguished speakers are set to deliver thought-provoking presentations and address the latest developments and key issues affecting the FM and estates industry. The FM Academy, sponsored by RICS, will also see a number of highly charged debate sessions and panel discussions and in response to the ever expanding role of the FM, a new Fire, Safety and Security Zone is being introduced to Total Workplace Management 2011. This dedicated area that will highlight exhibitors offering products and services across the fire, safety and security remits.
Jim Woolley, UK Business Development Manager of Total Workplace Management exhibitor KONE, providers of innovative and eco-efficient solutions for lifts, escalators, doors, loading bays and access, said: “In addition to product solutions as part of our service business we have also worked to improve our own environmental impact through the use of smaller more economical vans, paperless reporting and route optimisation. We are also 14001 accredited extending from our buildings, engineers and environmental management.”
