Government and industry launch requirements for UK EV industry
Today (8 March), a committee of experts from government, the automotive, energy and electrical industries have launched The Code of Practice for Electrical Vehicle Charging Equipment Installation. The new Code of Practice is the first ever authoritative, practical installation guide for all those involved in the manufacture and installation of EV charging points.
Developed by an expert committee of representatives from across the EV industry, including the Technical Regulations team at the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), alongside other government and regulatory bodies, The Code of Practice is the first document on EV charging equipment installation that is fully compliant with the IET Wiring Regulations BS 7671:2008(2011) now in force, as well as the latest European and international standards.
The Code of Practice includes detailed guidelines and checklists for the correct installation of charging points in all locations including offices, factories, car parks and domestic environments. It takes into account the range of charging equipment now available on the UK market, and the requirements of all types of EV and PHEV road vehicles, such as motorbikes, HGVs, vans and cars.
Carolyn White, Director at IET Standards Ltd said: “As the demand for electric and hybrid vehicles is expected to increase rapidly from 2012 onwards, The Code of Practice for Electrical Vehicle Charging Equipment Installations represents the first time the industry has come together with Government to agree comprehensive guidance in this area. This will ensure all charge points are installed correctly and are safe for use.
“The new Code of Practice is aimed at a very modern phenomenon in transportation, and highlights the electrical industry’s commitment to move with the times.”
The Code of Practice for Electrical Vehicle Charging Equipment Installations is published by IET Standards Limited and can be purchased from www.ietstandards.com/ev.
