Enclosures under Tyne
Having completed the installation of switchgear enclosures in the North East’s new Tyne Tunnel, Dudley-based A&T Enclosures is continuing to contribute to the project.
The Black Country company is supplying switchgear enclosures for the refurbishment of the original tunnel. The two tunnels that pass under the River Tyne between Jarrow and Wallsend have been the subject of a major development scheme designed to accommodate the continually increasing volumes of traffic in the area.
The £500,000 contract to install the in-wall enclosures every 100 metres for all the electrical control and emergency control points throughout the two tunnels was secured by A&T through a major switchgear manufacturer.
A&T’s Managing Director Tim King explained that all of the enclosures on the Tyne project are built to a very high specification. “Every unit is constructed from Stainless Steel Grade 316 and is built to meet rigorous IP65 standards (protection against the ingress of dust and moisture) to ensure that it is fully suited to the demands of the tunnel environment. These are bespoke enclosures, designed to fit the recesses of the tunnels.”
A&T Enclosures’ products are used around the world in everything from the rail industry to the marine and power generation sectors and can be built to perform in the most demanding environments.
