The publishing last year of BS 8519:2010 Code of Practice has led to a number of misleading claims being made for some cables, with the confusion appearing to have arisen from a misinterpretation of the different test methods required for power and control cables. Draka’s Mark Froggatt explains.

LPCB-approved armoured power cable (08 October 2009)
Draka can offer a full range of third-party approved steel wire armoured power cables down to 4mm2. The enhanced LPCB (Loss Prevention Certification Board) approved 600/1000V Firetuf Powerplus cable offering is available in two, three and four-core options with nominal conductor areas spanning from 4mm2 to 400mm2. The range also includes a 2.5mm2 seven-core cable.

Connecting the Tunnel (10 October 2008)
Draka’s Firetuf Connecta system has been chosen for the extension to the Docklands Light Railway [DLR] from King George V station to the new Woolwich Arsenal station. The decision ensures the integrity of the emergency lighting in the tunnel – which runs as deep as 35 metres under the River Thames – that is the major element of the £180 million, 2.5km extension due for completion in early 2009.
