Contractor goes back to school for lessons in electricals

M&E contractor, MSL (Mechanical Services Ltd), has used an innovative combination of plastic piping and steel wire cable tray that is usually specified for electrical installations to complete a new water services system at a Kent Grammar School.

Dane Court Grammar School in Broadstairs has undergone a major re-development programme through construction company Kier which has led to the need to install a completely new water services system for both heating and drinking/waste water in six new school buildings and one large refurbished building. The project's M&E consultants specified the use of chlorine-free plastic piping and MSL opted to use George Fischer 'INSTAFLEX' piping system for the heating and hot and cold water services on the installation.

Simon Alder, (Marketing Manager) at George Fischer explains: "We recommended the use of steel wire cable tray for the installation of our plastic piping as the product is so flexible and light weight it can be quickly positioned and installed saving valuable on-site time"

MSL used Cablofil steel wire tray in varying widths including 150mm, 200mm and 300 mm, suspending the system from the soffit before installing the pre-insulated pipework, which was then secured in place with cable ties. Cablofil visited the company to demonstrate the system pre-installation and also provided training on-site to help the contractor's team become proficient in cutting, shaping and joining the system.

"We found the Cablofil system very easy to install," commented Ken Wright of MSL, "and the training the company provided meant that the whole team was really comfortable with it from day one - even though none of us had ever used steel wire tray before! It is certainly an installation method that we will use again in the future."
