Testing hits the right note
The North West Corner Development project, which was overseen by Preston Lee Chambers and Allenbuild, used the services of Alard Electrical for the development of the RNCM.
The £200,000 project was carried out to provide a bar, restaurant, and bistro, as well as teaching and conference facilities and consisted of stripping out existing cables, fittings, and trunking and the distribution infrastructure.
This particular project is the fourth phase of works undertaken by Alard at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM). The initial electrical installation included enabling works for the build to progress and the installation of the mains and sub-mains low voltage power and distribution system.
The main electrical installation consisted of emergency lighting, general lighting, small power, mechanical heating and ventilation system controls, fire alarms, intruder alarms and door and disabled access.
Following the completion of the project, Alard Electrical has been carrying out the design aspects of small jobs so as to reduce the RNCM’s ongoing project management and consultancy costs.
In fact, Alard currently has a rolling contract with responsibility for maintaining the RNCM’s electrical distribution in compliance with the Periodic Test and Inspection requirements in BS 7571:2008 17th edition and the Electricity at Work Act 1984. Furthermore, the addition of TEGG service has now enabled Alard Electrical to carry out full energised testing of the low voltage distribution system without disruption or shutting down any of the faculties.
This has made a big impact to it’s clients because the company can now test their critical systems and equipment that had not previously been tested, such as data centres, fire, CO², smoke alarms and telephone systems; all of which are vital to the functioning of businesses and the health and safety of people using the facilities.
All employers have legal obligations under the Health and Safety at work Act 1974 and the Electricity at work Regulations 1989 to ensure that electrical installations and equipment in places of work are safe. The Periodic Test and Inspection, commonly known as ‘Fixed Wire Testing’ is one method of ensuring that an electrical distribution system is safe.
