Dr. Jeremy Hodge (pictured), Chief Executive of the British Approvals Service for Cables (BASEC) reports on the withdrawal of BS 6346 and the development of 'BS 8573 Electric cables - Thermosetting insulated, non-armoured cables with a voltage of 600/1 000V, for fixed installations, having low emissions of smoke and corrosive when affected by fire’, which is currently in preparation with the British Standards Institution (BSI).

ACI exposes defective cable (24 June 2010)
An Approved Cables Initiative (ACI) investigation has led to more than 11 million metres of cable manufactured by Turkish company, Atlas Kablo, being recalled from the UK market, following the suspension of two of its product certification licences.

BASEC suspends Atlas Kablo’s certification licence (17 June 2010)
BASEC advises the electrical sector to be vigilant for affected Atlas Kablo, ‘2010’ dated, batches of cable which have been found to have excessive conductor resistance - insufficient copper. Atlas Kablo has been required by BASEC to immediately investigate and rectify the problem and to assist the market in locating and recovering affected product for scrapping.

Approved Cables Initiative gains further political support (26 May 2010)
Newly re-elected MP for Wrexham, Ian Lucas, spent some of his pre-election campaign visiting Prysmian’s factory in Wrexham, North Wales and confirmed his backing for the ACI in the process. Prysmian is a lead supporter of the ACI and is at the front of the fight against non-approved and counterfeit cables.
