shentongroup at the theatre
shentongroup, the specialist supplier of power generation and energy support systems, has expanded its long term association with the iconic Minack Theatre in Cornwall by converting its generator from single phase to three phase following a power upgrade at the facility.
Single phase distribution is commonly used in rural areas where the cost of supplying up three-phase distribution is high. Until recently, the Minack Theatre, an open-air amphithreatre cut into the granite cliff above Porthcurno near Lands End, could only receive single phase power but as part of building work carried out to upgrade the site, electricity company, Western Power, converted the facility to three-phase.
However, the power upgrade meant that the theatre’s single phase generator could not be used. Prior to the upgrade, the Scorpion generator, supplied by shentongroup in 2003 and serviced since then under the company’s Merlin Powercare24 contract, was utilised for standby power in the event of a powercut. “We didn’t want to have to buy another generator, so contacted shentongroup to see if it was possible to change it from single to three phase power”, said Phillip Jackson, Theatre Manager. “The company has always looked after us very well so we knew we could rely on them and, needless to say, they didn’t let us down”. The company’s engineers soon got to work to reconfiguring and converting the generator to provide the three-phase output required. Now the theatre is reaping the benefits of the extra efficiency of three-phase power and has not had to invest in a new generator. The Minack Theatre is continuing to use shentongroup’s Powercare24 service to ensure that the generator is in good working order at all times. The service includes 24/7/365 nationwide maintenance as well as two-scheduled service visits and emergency call out with a guaranteed 4-hour response.
